How to get to Isla del Sol from Copacabana?
To get to Isla del Sol Bolivia, as a first step you have to be in Copacabana, if you stil don’t know how to get there. You can learn how to get from Puno or from La Paz.
When you are in Copacabana, these are the ways to get to Isla del Sol Bolivia.
1.- By public boats :
Copacabana is an small city, that is why it will be easy for you to find the Port.
Once there, you will find a big white anchor monument and next to it, some stands that sells boat tickets to Isla del Sol and Isla de la Luna.
¿South or North side?
It’s important that you say to the person who sells the tickets, If you will go to the South Side or to the North Side.
You can’t miss this information because they are different place on different sides of the island and they aren’t close to each other. The south side’s name is YUMANI and the north side’s name is CHALLAPAMPA.
The boat ticket is 40 – 45 bolivianos one way. There are 2 daily departures.
The first one at 8:30 a.m and the second one at 1:30 pm.
Boats can have some delays, but we suggest to be at the port earlier than the time departure, because there aren’t number seats, it means that you will pick up as soon as you get inside the boat and if you are the last, maybe you shouldn’t get a seat inside the boat and have to sit at the outside part of boat.
So, stay close and ask at the staff to show you the boat that will leave , to be ready to go with no worries.
The travel journey is 1 hour 30 minutes. On your arrival to the Isla del Sol, you need to pay your entrance fee.
Remember that is so important saying if you will go to the north or south side, because sometimes there is just one boat going to both places, and if you don’t pay attention you could end up on north side instead of south.
2.- By Private Boat:
As we have told you before, there are just 2 daily public boat departures. Therefore if you arrive later than 1:30 pm, you won’t find a shared boat, but you will find several boats that you can hire for a private service to Isla del Sol. Price is between 500 – 700 bolivianos, but even if with a private service, boats are not allowed to leave later than 4 pm. for safety reasons.
It’s important also that you explain if you need to go to the south or north side.
3.- Taxi y private boat to Yampupata:
This options is taken for travelers who really want to go to the Isla del Sol and weren’t able to take a shared boat. This is the last option to get to the Island.
It consists in taking a taxi from Copacabana and ask the driver to take you to Yampupata. You won’t have problems as this is a well-known place. Time travel is 45 minutes, once in Yampupata you can hire a private boat To Isla del Sol.
The most important thing you need to know is that this transfer is just available from 6 p.m. You won’t be able to find a boat earliert as it’s not allowed.
